Training

Medical students and residents, in all years of training, from all of the Ontario university medical schools (as well as some from international medical schools), incorporate training at the Headwaters Health Care Centre and within local physicians’ offices as part of their education.

In 2012, 31 medical students and 16 family practice residents trained with family physicians, internists, general surgeons, ob/gynecologists, radiologists, and a paediatrician. There are specialists in a number of other fields prepared to accept medical students and residents for training experiences.

Rural Ontario Medical Program

In past years, students have taken advantage of a 5 week Rural Ontario Medical Program (ROMP) core program over the summer. Family practice residents may choose training experiences varying from weeks up to 12 months in Orangeville and surrounding communities. Within the past 10 years, local family physicians have twice been recognized as “Preceptor of the Year” as voted by University of Toronto family practice residents in ROMP experiences, and Orangeville has been for years considered a coveted placement for training.
